November 2011

- Sport and Citizenship  welcomes the Communication from the Commission, "ERASMUS FOR ALL: the EU programme for Education, Training, Youth and Sport" which foresees €238 million funding for European cooperation in sport between 2014 and 2020. The emphasis on sport for all, good governance, dual careers and levels of participation in sport and physical activity seems particularly relevant and we will try to suggest ways of thinking in these areas.

Sport and Citizenship will hold on December 15 on the premises of at the Université catholique de Louvain in Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium) a workshop "Europe, sport and volunteering: towards the necessary developpement of synergies between stakeholders ". It will gather members of the steering committee of the European network on "Sport and Volunteering" developed by our think tank and will be led by Thierry Zintz, member of the Scientific Committee of Sport and Citizenship, President of the network "Sport and volunteering," and Carole Ponchon, European projects leader at Sport and Citizenship.

- With only few months left of the European Year of Volunteering and a few days before the release of its special issue dedicated to the topic, Sport and Citizenship welcomes the adoption (on 20 September) by the European Commission of a Communication on EU policies and volunteering.

Sport and Citizenship welcomes the decision of the French Prime Minister to appoint its Director, Julian Jappert,  to the Haut Conseil à la Vie Associative (High Council for Community Life).

- Sport and Citizenship welcomes the decision of the Council of Europe which makes our think tank member of the EPAS (Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport) 's Consultative Committee. Together we will work to promote sport and its values ​​at the continental level as well as the establishment of a framework for a pan-European platform of intergovernmental cooperation in sport.

A few months after opening to competition of online sports betting, and while the European Commission has launched a broad consultation on this specific topic,Colin Miège, co-director of Sport and Citizenship's Scientific Committee, is publishing an article that presents a mixed assessment of the operation.

- Annie Sugier, member of Sport and Citizenship's scientific committee, will intervene during a round table on "Fight against fraud and discrimination in sport", organized by MEP Emine Bozkurt on the 22nd of September on the premisses of  the European Parliament.. Her lecture will deal with gender issues. This round table will be opened by the Commissioner in charge of sports, Mrs Vassiliou. More information

- Carole Ponchon, European Project Leader for Sport and Citizenship, will take part to the second EuroVolNet seminar organised by ISCA, 23  to 25 September 2011, Riga, Latvia. More information



August 2011:

- Sport and Citizenship took part to the European Commission public consultation on on-line gambling in the Single Market. Our think tank's position on the subject.

- Sport and Citizenship is a media partner of the 9th edition of the Homeless World Cup, to be organised in Paris from 21-28 August 2011. Programme of the event.


July 2011 :

- Sport and Citizenship is pleased that the European Commission has proposed a multi-annual budgetary framework for 2014-2020, with EUR 15.2 billion earmarked for an integrated programme for education, training and youth ('Education Europe'), including a Sport Sub-Programme.
Strongly supported by our think tank, this measure -if confirmed- is a step forward in building a true European sports policy. More information on  the Commission website.


- Julian Jappert, Director of Sport and Citizenship, will intervene during MEMOS V's Modul 3 on human ressources management, organised on the premisses of INSEP, Paris, on the 7th of July. His lecture will deal with lobbying activities. More information (in French).

- Laurent Thieule, President of Sport and Citizenship, will take part to a Breakfast Session on "Developing the European Dimension in Sport: What stakes for EU sport organizations and grassroots sport conference", organised by LOGOS Public Affairs on the 29th of June at 9:00 in Brussels. - Sport and Citizenship will be heard by the informal group "European Parliament Friends of Sport" on June 21st at 18:00 in the premises of the European Parliament. Laurent THIEULE, President of the think tank, will share with MEPs Sport and Citizenship‘s vision on the future of sport in Europe and present prospects for the future of the sport competency.

Conference on "Regional Policy and Sport", organised by the EU Olympic Committee office and the Commitee of the Regions on the 24th of May 2011.

- Sport and Citizenship took part to the consultation held by the Committee of the Regions on the 24th of May 2011 in order to prepare its opinion on the Communication on Sport adopted by the European Commission on January 2011. The Rapporteur on the opinion, Mr Roberto Pella, Member of the EDUC Commission of the CoR, together with his expert Mr Demetrio Albertini met and exchanged with representatives of the associations of local and regional authorities and other stakeholders. - Workshop "Preserving Sport Funding and the integrity of sports competitions", organised by Sport and Citizenship in partnership with The European Lotteries on the 24th of May 2011, on the premisses of the European Parliament.
Vincent Chaudel, Vice President, and Alexandre Husting, Co director of the Scientific Commitee represented the think tank and took part to the debate. More information

Sport and Citizenship was part of the newly lauched Sport Assembly, an initiative by the French Minsitry of Sport. Julian Jappert, Director, and Sylvain Landa, Development manager, were heard regarding the "Sport for All" issues.

- Sport and Citizenship attended the EuroVolNet Seminar: "Trends, Opportunities anc Challenges for Volunteering in Europe" held in Chatham Maritime, Medway Campus in UK, 6th-8th May. The seminar constitutes an important component of the EuroVolNet project (lead by ISCA and funded by the EU) and serves the overall aim of debating volunteering challenges in Europe.

- On 18 January 2011, the European Commission adopted a Communication entitled "Developing the European Dimension in Sport". The new proposals aim at strengthening the societal, economic and organisational dimensions of sport. Position of Sport and Citizenship on the Communication, to be downloaded here.

- Forum organised by the Committee of the Regions: Regional and local authorities in action during the European Year of Volunteering 2011, Brussels, January, 26th, 2011.
Sport and Citizenship is co-organising with the Committee of the Regions and the European Commission, Educa"ion and Culture DG, a workshop on volunteering in sport aiming at identifying how to improve volunteering infrastructures at local and EU level. This event will focus on exchange of best practice in support of the objectives set out for the European Year of Volunteering.

Colin Miège, Co-directeur of Sport and Citizenship, will moderate two conferences:
  • The consequences of the French territorial reform on the sport governance at regional, national and European level, in the presence of prestigious speakers: Denis Masseglia (Chairman of the french Olympic Committee), Safia Otokoré (President of the Sports Committee of the ARF) , Jacques Thouroude (Chairman of ANDES), Florence Rangeon (Assistant MEP), Bertrand Jarrige (Sports Director of  the French Ministry of Sports).
  • The relationship between the sports movement and public authorities: the new decision circuits, in the presence of prestigious speakers: Claudie Sagnac (Deputy Director of the Territorial Action of the French Ministry of  Sports), Brigitte Bourguignon (National Secretary for Sport of the Socialist Party), Vincent Debusschere (President ANDIISS), François Briançon (Deputy Commissioner for Sport in the city of Toulouse).   

- Contribute to the next "Europe for Citizens' programme".
Launch of the online consultation on the Europe for Citizens programme 2014-2020. The consultation will be open until January 5, 2011. We invite you to participate to this consultation and let the European Commission knows how sport is meaningful in the promotion of a united Europe opened to all European citizens.

- Representatives from the cities in Europe have developed 30 guidelines to support European municipalities in promoting children’s physical activity.
All users are welcome to work together with the project partners on the guidelines and to send them remarks or supplements by 15 December 2010.

- Sport and Citizenship is withdrawing from the Global Sport Industry Summit

A year ago, the organizers of this event came to us and proposed us to build a round table on sport values. Since then, we appeared, alongside other major companies, as partner on their website.

Nethertheless, due to communication trouble with the organisers and some suspicion of dodgy event, we have decided to withdraw from this project, such as some other companies.
We invite you to be really careful if you were thinking of attending this event.
